We have extensive experience of rodent metabolic physiology utilising a number of well-established techniques for studying carbohydrate and lipid metabolism like euglycemic-hyperinsulinemic clamps and oral and intravenous glucose tolerance tests. In this project we will undertake in vivo studies consisting in measurements of basic metabolic and endocrine parameters, as well as of overall and tissue-specific insulin sensitivity (euglycemic hyperinsulinemic clamps with the labelled 2-deoxy glucose technique).  Quantitative PCR measurements of mRNA expression and determination of protein expression of intermediates and enzymes involved in carbohydrate and lipid metabolism.  Acute and chronic intravenous, intra-arterial and intracerebroventricular administration of neuropeptides, hormones, metabolites, receptor agonists and antagonists.
